Afford Nation and the IwB invite you to join the movement to build an affordable world for all.
Join us as we officially launch ‘Afford Nation’ on January 19th, 2019 – an event, exhibition, and movement that critiques our current state of unaffordability and explores how we might build a more affordable nation. The 2018/2019 class of the Institute Without Boundaries (IwB), Interdisciplinary Design Strategy program, is seeking to answer the question “If unaffordability is a solvable problem, what’s preventing us from solving it?”
We are living through an affordability crisis. At nearly every income level in every corner of the world, we’re feeling the crunch. As the cost of basic goods and services continue to rise, the topic of affordability is becoming increasingly critical. Growing income inequality, increasingly precarious employment, mass migration, rapid urbanization, technological innovations, and climate change are transforming the way we live. These globally interconnected issues and systems impact us in both negative and positive ways.
We have an opportunity, as human-centred design practitioners, to shape a more humanist and inclusive world. It starts by uncovering how our perceptions of value may be holding us back from building an affordable world and remembering our roots: finding and addressing real human needs, upholding human values, and creating meaningful experiences. Through this exhibition, the current cohort of IwB students will showcase their research, insights, and ideas that demonstrate how we might design a more affordable future.
